DoE puts up list of vacant EWS seats

The Directorate of Education has released a list of vacant seats under the economically weaker section category for class 1 students in every district on Monday.

The list of vacant seats in pre-nursery and nursery classes in unaided recognised schools will be released in two days.

“The Right to Education Act is applicable from class 1. We want to fill these seats before moving on to other classes,” said education deputy director (east) Renu Sharma.
“The list for the remaining seats will be out soon as we are waiting for schools to give us data.”

East district has some 300 vacant seats, north-east Delhi has 2,096, north 262, north-west A and B districts 500, west A and B districts 700, south-west 90, south 88 and central 18 seats.

But information on seats for zone number 8, 9, 12, 21, 22, 24 and 26 has not be made available yet.

DoE expects schools to fill these seats immediately and has uploaded a common application form for admission under the freeship quota, which specifies essential documents to prove a family’s financial status.

DoE’s move came after a recent order by the High Court to fill all vacant EWS seats before the summer vacation. “Schools must finish the admission process by May 12 as that is when most schools start their summer vacation,” said advocate Khagesh Jha.

“The department plans to ask for more time to ensure that admissions are not done in a hurry.”

According to the April 28 DoE circular, schools must segregate all applications as per the neighbourhood criteria laid down under the February 13 circular.

“The head of the school and admission authority must be present even during the summer vacation until the process of filing up vacant seats is over,” the circular had stated.
