Another suicide at Metro station, fourth in six days

A 22-year-old man was killed after he allegedly jumped off the platform railing at Govindpuri Metro station in south-east Delhi on Tuesday.

He fell on to the road below. This was the fourth incident of suicide at a Metro station in just six days. 

The victim, Anil Kumar, lived at a slum in Okhla.

“Anil jumped off the platform at Govindpuri Metro station on the violet line. No suicide note has been found,” said B S Gujjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways). “We don’t know yet why he took the extreme step.”

A witnesss said Anil was last seen at the platform talking on his cellphone. Then he climbed up the railing and jumped off.

He was taken to the AIIMS trauma centre, where he was declared brought dead.A case under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been registered with Kalkaji Mandir (metro) police station.

“We are examining the CCTV footage at the station to know what really happened,” a police official said.

Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said the spurt in suicide cases at Metro stations is unfortunate. He appealed to passengers to help prevent such incidents.

“DMRC is extremely concerned about the incidents on its premises. People must keep watch over other passengers and act appropriately if any anything is amiss,” Dayal said.

“Metro and security staff should be immediately alerted to thwart any suspected attempt,” he added.

On May 5, a 55-year-old retired government employee was killed after he jumped on to the tracks of INA Metro station on May 5.

A day earlier, a 27-year-old woman jumped off Kirti Nagar Metro station’s intersection platform, and on May 3, a marital discord drove 26-year-old bank employee Priya Khandelwal to kill herself at a Metro station in Gurgaon.

She succumbed to her injuries at Medanta Hospital.
