Connectivity a mirage to these islanders

Nandana Kudru, Ramannana Kudru, Shetra Kudru and Sahibra Kudru are situated in around 300 acre land adjacent to a bridge which provides connectivity between Brahmavar and Barkur.

There are over 200 houses in these kudrus.

However, the residents of Kudru are devoid of proper connectivity.

The residents have been demanding for a road connectivity that could easily link Brahmavar to Neelavara and Matpadi.

However, the demands have not been fulfilled. The villagers have laid mud road by mobilising resources. No development work related to road, bridge have reached these kudrus.

The school children and office-goers face lot of hardship during monsoon. Owing to lack of road and bridge, they are forced to cross the overflowing streams and rivers. Majority of the mud roads gets inundated during monsoon.

At the same time, the drains which are filled with garbage blocks the easy flow of water during monsoon and aggravates the situation, say villagers.

The villagers have given their land to lay road to allow the movement of vehicles several years ago. However, the road is still a dream for the Kudru residents.

Nandanakudru is known for its fertile agriculture land. “With the increase in silt in the river, even a small rainfall will increase the water-level by six feet in the river,” say villagers.

Two minor bridges which were constructed 15 years ago are on the verge of collapse in the kudru. As the bridges get flooded during monsoon, there is no use of minor bridges for the residents during monsoon.

The use of traditional boat to cross the river is a common scene. However, purchasing a boat is a costly affair, rue villagers.

The three kudrus come under Kunjalu and Handadi Gram Panchayat limits. “We have been urging the elected representatives to solve our problems.
However, our pleas have fallen on the deaf ears.”
