4 hang themselves over 48 hrs, 2 of them after dowry demands

One victim was depressed, had money problems

Four persons hanged themselves in seperate suicide cases across the capital in last 48 hours, police said.

Reasons for suicide in these cases reported on Thursday included alleged dowry demands and financial problems.

Depressed over his low income income, a 33-year-old man committed suicide by hanging self from a ceiling fan inside his Ramesh Nagar home in west Delhi.

Gaurav’s body was found around 9:30 am on Thursday by his wife Pooja, said a police officer.

Pooja, who had gone to meet a relative on Wednesday night, returned home on Thursday and found him hanging.

She informed her family members and neighbours who rushed Gaurav to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Hospital authorities told police about the incident.

“Gaurav was disturbed over the insufficient income he got from from his video and photography business. This seems to be the only reason behind this extreme step.

“However, we are also looking at it from other angles,” said a police officer, quoting his wife’s statement.

Youth hangs self

In north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar, a 21-year-old woman also hanged herself from a ceiling fan late on Tuesday night.

According to police, the woman’s family has levelled allegations of dowry against her in-laws.

Shivani, whose husband works in the private sector, committed suicide at her in-laws house around 10 pm on Tuesday.

Based on her parents’ claims, a police officer said she was harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry ever since her marriage three years ago.

The couple has a one-and-a-half-years-old daughter.

Depressed husband

A 29-year-old driver hanged himself at Ambedkar Nagar in south Delhi. Arjun Singh, who operated private cabs, was found hanging at 8 am at his Pashchim Puri house.

Police have recovered a suicide note in which he has not blamed anyone but has written that he was depressed over his marriage life.

He is survived by four children, two of them were from his first wife who died a few years ago.

Dowry death

Twenty-six-year-old Najma allegedly committed suicide at her home in Seelampur of north-east Delhi on Wednesday night.

“She was married to Hassan in 2009. Her family members have alleged that she took the extreme step as Hassan’s family demanded dowry.

“An SDM inquiry was ordered. The couple has an 18-month-old daughter,” a police official said.
