Producing energy, mechanical anti-lock breaking system mooted

Innovative ideas reigned at the seventh edition of cogNIEscience ‘12 with students from several colleges presenting papers on design, manufacturing, thermal and automobile to improve existing systems.

CogNIEscience ‘12 was organised by the mechanical department of National Institute of Engineering (NIE) here on Saturday for under graduate and post graduate students of mechanical, industrial production and automobile engineering.

Several innovative ideas included a proposal for production of energy in urban areas, hybrid solar dryer, surveillance snake robot,  mechanical anti-lock breaking system for two-wheelers, nanotechnology in defence and power generation from railway tracks.

Hybrid solar dryer

Manoj Kalkoti of NIE presented a paper on developing a hybrid solar dryer, which would remove water from food products and prevent fermentation.

With the aim to increase of shelf-life of food products by drying and to make it a cost-effective, Kalkoti suggested the design of the hybrid solar dryer.

He said a hybrid solar dryer would ensure that food can be dried in humid as well as arid conditions. Also, food would be of high quality and it would be more efficient.

Renewable energy

Shashank M Muktheser and Vishal Chandrashekar of PES College of Engineering, Mandya, discussed a proposal for production of energy in urban areas.

They argued that use of renewables namely wind and solar may eliminate the need to depend on fossil fuel to power houses.

Muktheser and Chandrashekar suggested the use of corner wind turbines, vertical axis wind turbines, solar transparent windows, solar concentrators and flexible solar panels for providing electricity supply to houses.

President, NIE board of management S R Subba Rao, Nexshore Technologies CEO B R Pramod Rao NIE principal Prof G L Shekar, head of mechanical engineering department Prof N V Raghavendra, cogNIEscience '12 faculty coordinator Tajmul Pasha and others were present.
