Simplicity counts

After making her debut with Salman Khan’s Dabangg in 2010 and grabbing almost every popular debutant award for the same, actress Sonakshi Sinha is now back in the news this season. She was recently seen in town collecting a special fitness award at an event, “I believe I am doing it for the right reason which is health and wellness, and most of all - happiness. There is no point starving yourself to look a certain way; you can be beautiful by being in a healthier shape, size and be proud of who you are. So it’s a good position to be in and I am glad that I am a role model,” she says.

When Metrolife asked her about the secret behind her in-shape body, she replied “I gym. Right now my schedule is very hectic so I barely get time for that, so I have to control my diet. I am a foodie so it is very difficult, but I try as much as I can to control my diet.”

Even though she belongs to a filmy family, Sonakshi was never interested in films. She is a professionally qualified fashion designer and did not harbour any intent of being an actor. So it came as a surprise when not only did she debut but also did a great job of it in Dabangg. The actress is already ruling the hearts of
millions.

It has been almost a year and a half since her silver screen appearance. Why this long break? “This break wasn’t intentional. I have been busy shooting for various films all this while. Otherwise, I was busy with shows, photo shoots and have been working this whole time. It isn’t like I have been away,” she says.

Once again she will be seen playing a simple, small town girl in Rowdy Rathore, in which she stars opposite Akshay Kumar. The actress firmly believes in portraying a character in reel life, which is close to her in real life. “I am a very simple person at  heart and I am a very simple person in real life. So I am very happy playing straight characters. This character is a part of me and I have no complaints with such roles. There will always be some part of me in my character and I can only be myself,” she explains.

In Rowdy Rathore, she will be seen playing the role of an outspoken girl from Patna who falls in love with someone completely opposite. Her bonding with Akshay was comfortable on the sets of the movie too. “Akshay is a fantastic co-star. Very funny, very chilled out and doesn’t make you feel that he has been there for so long and that he is a big superstar. He makes you feel at home. It was great to work with him. He keeps the atmosphere on sets lively, jovial and happy. Though he played pranks on the sets all the time and I was his bakra on more than one occasion, since we have done two movies together now Rowdy Rathore and Joker, I get to know when he is up with something. I’ve smartened up.”

Her choice of films is also smart. Does veteran actor and dad Shatrughan Sinha get to make critical decisions regarding her roles?

“Knowing the experience he has had, I do go to him and consult him all the time as I need his advice. So the family sits together and decides whether to take the role or not,” she states matter-of-factly and candidly. Unlike a lot of newcomers, Sonakshi doesn’t shy away from admitting parental influence in her career.

A lot more is expected from this down-to-earth gal whose fans are now eagerly awaiting Joker, Son of Sardar, Lootera, Dabangg 2 and Once upon a time again.
