One policeman was arrested by CID on Friday for allegedly collecting money from youths of Junglemahal with a promise to give jobs in the police service.

Basudeb Singh, an ASI with Jhargram reserved force battalion, was apprehended at Midnapore in West Midnapore district after finding evidence of his alleged complicity in collecting money by fraudulent means, the police said.

He was suspected to have been involved with a racket after two persons Nisith Rana and Anup Pattanaik were arrested, sources said. The CID officers got more information after Singh’s mobile telephone was tapped, officials said. In a separate incident at Daspur in West Midnapore, eight policemen were injured when villagers beat them up as they went to raid a gambling den.
