Water woes rock Assembly

Last Updated 29 May 2012, 20:22 IST

The unavailability of water in various parts of Delhi dominated Delhi Assembly on Tuesday — several BJP MLAs raised the issue during Question Hour and special mention (rule 280) — wherein members are allowed to raise matters concerning their constituencies.

About ten BJP MLAs complained of water crisis in their areas and requested instant action from government.

According to Anil Jha, BJP MLA from Kirari, his constituency does not have a single colony or area which gets piped water supply from Delh jal board.

Requesting Rs 500 crore special package for his constituency, Jha said while an underground reservoir is being built in the area, he doubts if it will be enough.

“It should go as a record in guinness book. A constituency in the national capital has zero per cent water availability, all the colonies here are unauthorised with no sewerage,” added Jha while speaking in the House.

Subhash Sachdeva, BJP MLA from Moti Nagar raised similar concerns and said he requested chief minister to do something about providing water in his area.

“I shaved my head on Monday and offered my hair to please jal devi (Water goddess)” added Sachdeva.

There was a mild ruckus in the House when speaker Yoganand Shastri said nobody should be blamed for water woes and everybody should make efforts to conserve water.

Taking offence to the statement, leader of opposition Prof V K Malhotra said who should be blamed for the mess.

“Chief minister is the chairperson of Delhi jal board. If she is not responsible who is? If Haryana has cut down water supply to Delhi, who should be held responsible?” added Malhotra. If she cannot take responsibility, she should step down,” said Malhotra.

‘Budget leak’
The BJP on Tuesday demanded to bring in privilege motion in Delhi Assembly alleging leakage of Delhi budget. During the CM’s budget speech on Monday, several Delhi government officials were seen reading the copy of budget while it was yet to be given to the members of the House. “The members of the House were not given the copy of budget till the CM finished her speech. However, several officers sitting in the officers gallery had a copy. This tantamounts to leakage of budget and we call for a Privilege Motion,” said V K Malhotra.
