It's a one shot wonder

Director Aravind Kaushik’s films have always been pegged as different.

His unconventional techniques of film-making may not have caught the fancy of many critics but they sure have created a buzz among youngsters.

After movies like Nam Areal Ondina and Tuglak, the director is now back with Nam Areal Innondina.

Just when one thinks this is going to be a sequel to his first film, the director says, “This is not a sequel. It’s a completely different movie. The story is about seven guys living in an area.”

So what makes this movie different? Through this film, Aravind wants to explore a whole new genre called ‘real time drama’. He wants to do this by capturing the entire movie in two hours straight and in just one shot.

“This genre is not completely explored in the Kannada film industry. I have always been a big fan of real time drama. Apart from the script being crisp, so much thought goes into each of the characters as well in this genre.

When you actually look at it, there are so many stories waiting to be made,” he says.  And making this movie, he says, will not only be exciting but also a big challenge.

The real trigger to this concept was when Aravind watched the Nicholas Cage starrer ‘Snake Eyes’. Watching a particular shot that was 20 minutes long made him wonder whether he could try something like this in his films.

“It was only after discussing the entire concept with the team and seeing their enthusiasm that I got down to the intricacies of making it. Yes it’s not as easy as it looks. We will be having a series of reading sessions and then we will be practising a whole lot before getting down to actually filming the movie,” he adds.

Apart from Rakshit, who had earlier worked with Kaushik in Tuglak, the cast consists of newbies. “They are all from a theatre background. Anish, who has worked with me earlier, was eager to work with me in this one as well. But due to other commitments, he backed out,” says Aravind.

The team has already had one reading session. According to Aravind, there will be 20 such reading sessions in which he will allow the actors to improvise on their characters.  What’s more, the film will also have a song and an action sequence.

“We will be having one song and action and these too will be filmed in one shot. People may think it’s not possible but I feel it all boils down to one’s common sense.

If one has his or her technical knowledge in the right place, the rest will just fall into place. I hope this attempt of mine will start a whole new genre in the industry,” he signs off.
