Government official held, 100 gram gold seized

Speaking to the media here on Thursday, Udupi SP Praveen Pawar informed that further investigation of the case was taken up by Byndoor CPI Kantharaj. The revelation by the accused Jayavanth C Shetty, a government employee and the elder brother of the prime accused Sanjeeva Naik, who was arrested on May 13 evening, confessed his role in the conspiracy and the commission of the offense. At his instance gold ornaments weighing 100 grams (5 gold bangles, 2 gold necklaces and 1 ring) which were pledged in a Co-operative bank in Udupi was seized. He had also deposited Rs 1.70 lakhs in two different banks in Udupi which was part of the cash stolen from the Kambadakone Co-operative bank. Transactions of all the bank accounts have been frozen, he said.

Further, one Tata Indica car owned by Sanjeeva Naik was confiscated. This car was used for transporting the stolen gas cylinder, which was used for opening the safe locker of the Kambadakone Co-operative bank, he informed.

Jayavanth C Shetty is a resident of Parkala of Udupi district. A post graduate in economics he joined the department of agriculture as Agriculture Assistant in the year 1975 and currently he is working as taluk water shed officer in Udupi. Despite being a government employee, he had taken part in the conspiracy prior to the commission of burglary and subsequently took part in the disposing part of the stolen property. He had suppressed the facts till he was arrested on Wednesday, Pawar said.

A report has been sent to the Head of the Department recommending the placing of Jayavanth C Shetty under suspension. He was produced before the court in Kundapur on Thursday and has been remanded to judicial custody for a period of 15 days, he added.
