Organisations sound 'green' warning

World environment day celebrated; volunteers carry message from nature

World Environment Day was celebrated in the city with district administration and various other organisations organising programmes to improve awareness among public about the importance of environment conservation.

Deputy commissioner P S Vastrad and zilla panchayat CEO Ajay Nagabhushan inspected the models displayed by CREST of NIE College on energy conservation using biofuels. Later, the deputy commissioner and ZP CEO planted saplings and participated in a bicycle rally.

Vastrad said the government is giving priority to conservation of lakes and waste management in cities. Also, afforestation programmes are also a key part of environment conservation, he added.

Additional deputy commissioner Naganaik, ZP planning officer Vasundharadevi, conservator of forests Nagaraj, DDPI B K Basavaraju and others were present.

At NIE PU College

World Environment Day was celebrated at NIE PU College on Tuesday. Vasanthkumar Mysoremath, an environmentalist  and social activist participated in the programme.
Principal Prof Meena Shekar and staff planted a sapling to improve awareness among students about environment. Vasanth Kumar Mysoremath sensitised students about global warming, climate change and its impacts on the planet.

Students took a pledge to safeguard the environment and leave some natural resources for future generation.

Mysore Zoo

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, which houses one of the largest number of animals in the state, involved youth club members to mark World Environment Day.

The rally from deputy commissioner’s office to the zoo was flagged off by police commissioner K L Sudheer. Photography expo by Thippeswamy was organised at the zoo. Zoo executive director B P Ravi, deputy director Vijay Kumar, manager Shivanna and others were present.

A cycle rally was also jointly organised by St Philomena’s College and Organisation for Development of People (ODP). More than 500 students took part in the rally. Bishop Thomas Vazhapilly flagged off the event.

At Columbia Asia

More than 100 participants including doctors, staff and nursing students took part in a cycle rally organised by Columbia Asia Hospital on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.

The participants pedalled more than 25 km to improve awareness about conserving the environment.

The rally was flagged off by deputy commissioner P S Vastrad. On the occasion of World Environmental Day, to improve awareness among residents, Renewable Energy Mobile Exhibition Van (REMEV) of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd(KREDL) traversed through the city with message ‘Use renewable energy,  save environment’. They also distributed brochures caring messages on advantages of using solar equipment.
