To put a curb on the increasing e-waste in the city, e-dustbins will be placed at all the district-level offices. Deputy Commissioner D S Vishwanath addressing a gathering at the World Environment Day in the city on Tuesday, asked his colleagues to not to cast away electronic equipment instead put it in the e-dustbin. This small gesture would do a lot towards conservation of nature, he said.

He was of the opinion that World Environment Day observation should not be restricted for one day, instead, it should become a practice among everyone. He planted a few saplings at his office premises to mark the day.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P Rajendra Cholan, Tahsildar Muniveerappa, SP Ramnivas Sepat and Deputy Conservator of Forests Puttanna too planted the saplings. State Pollution Control Board officer VG Kartikeyan was present.

Felling of huge trees has become common these days in the name of development and road widening. If it goes unabated, it would only render the land dry, said District Principal and Sessions Judge S Y Eranna.

At the World Environment Day programme, organised here on Tuesday, he said people should be sensitised against such acts and grow more plants.

Forest land

Deputy Conservator of Forests I V Nagesh said the district accounts of only 8 per cent of forest land. To develop forest land, the department provides 400 saplings free of cost to be planted in 400 hectare of land. Apart from it, the grower will get Rs 10 to Rs 20 for the plant grown, he added.

He further said that the department issues free saplings to grow at schools or even individual houses. Pollution Control Board officer Rekha was present.

World Environment Day was also observed at Gudibande and Shidlaghatta.
