<p>The next time you hire an auto, at especially at night, better be careful as the driver at the wheel may not be an authorised one. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Of the 2,500 odd autorickshaws which were checked during a 90-minute drive on <br />Wednesday night, almost one-fourth were being driving by men not carrying the mandatory public service vehicle badge. <br /><br />“Of the 2,570 three wheelers checked, 657 drivers were found to be driving without a PSV badge. Only six owned the vehicles as well. The rest were driving autorickshaws hired on rent,” said Satyendra Garg, joint CP (traffic). <br /><br />While the auto drivers without a PSV badge were slapped a fine of Rs 100, a challan of Rs 2,000 was slapped against owners who had rented out their vehilces, violating permit rules.<br /><br />Besides, the permit of such autos were suspended immediately for up to 30 days. <br />Surprisingly, 2,083 three wheelers were booked for similar offences over the last five months, while over 650 vehicles were booked during the 90-minute drive on Wednesday alone, which reflects the large number of people driving autorickshaws without the PSV badge during the night. <br /><br />Traffic police have launched the special drive against the three wheeler drivers after a series of complaints received against auto drivers without the PSV badge. Officials said the absence of a badge on a driver compromises with the security of the passengers, as the badges are issued after verification of the driver.<br /><br />While challans were issued against 1,480 auto drivers, at least 258 vehicles were impounded. “The vehicle of auto drivers who failed to produce even a driving license and other papers apart from the PSV badge were impounded. A total of 172 drivers were found to be driving without a driving license,” said Garg. <br /><br />Traffic police officials said the drive would continue between 9 pm and 10:30 pm. Thirty teams of enforcement wing of transport department will carry out the drive till June 18 during which all types of vehicles will be checked. <br /><br />Transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely took the decision to launh the drive. If a motorist does not have a pollution under control certificate and if he is first time offender, then a fine of Rs 1,000 will be imposed while the fine amount will be Rs 2,000 in case of second time offenders.</p>
