Dirty picture: Cinema posters an eyesore in Ch'nagar

Disfigurement
Last Updated 10 June 2012, 16:53 IST

Whether cinema lovers rejoice this sight or not, the posters have adorned every conceivable public space in the city, making it look like a cinema studio.

The ugliness is just not palpable, it can be felt all over Chamarajanagar. And, understandably so, the officials are in deep slumber since this does not seem to be an issue that is of any importance to them.

For, posters are not limited to cinemas alone. Come a political meeting, posters adorn walls.
Then another layer of posters cover is when a religious ceremony is held.

Another political party leader arrives, walls get another layer of posters, covering the ones before. And, regular ‘coverage’ happens every Friday when movies release. Thursday night, the city doesn’t sleep.

It gets a new makeover with new posters, exposing the hero’s pumped up chest, rippling muscles and heroine’s innocent smile defying the gyrating waist, and whatever little clothing revealing more body than covering it.

Citizens are tired of these hideous sights. According to the Protecting Public Places Against Disfigurement Act, 1981, no one can put posters on government property or private property without permission from the owners concerned.

This offence can attract a penalty up to Rs 1,000 or six months imprisonment, or both.
But, in the city municipality limits, this norm has been flouted, all the time.

Birthday of a corporator, political leader, MLA’s visit, minister passing by the city, literally everything sets of this poster diarrhoea in city.

Free publicity often disfigures public places, but no one is really bothered. Citizens are hoping the city’s grace will be restored sooner or later, with authorities taking note of this poster mania.
