Udupi registers average polling

Udupi district recorded 56.91 per cent polling for South West teachers constituency poll and 52.85 percent polling for South West graduates constituency poll held for Legislative Council here on Sunday.

A total number of 1,173 teachers which include 805 men and 368 women teachers voted for teachers constituency poll whereas 3,242 graduates of which 2,169 men and 1,082 women voted in the district for graduates constituency poll.

There were 2,061 voters in the district for the teachers constituency and 6,134 voters for graduates constituency. The counting for the poll will be held on June 13 in Mysore. Micro observers were present in all the polling stations.

There are seven contestants in the fray for graduates constituency and eight for teachers constituency. The constituency covers Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikmagalur, Kodagu, Shimoga and two taluks Honnala and Chennagiri of Davanagere districts.

Contestants for graduate constituency are D H Shankaramurthy (BJP), SP Dinesh (Congress), S L Bhojegowda (JDS) and independent candidates Prabhakar Prabhu, B K Manjunath, Srinivas Shenoy and Shankar Murthy.

Candidates for teachers’ constituency include Capt Ganesh Karnik (BJP), Ramesh Joyappa Hosur (Congress), C M Panchaksharaiah (JD(S)) and independent candidates Dr Arun Devdas, K K Manjunath Kumar, M P M Shanmukappa and Suryanarayan Bhat.  

The polling centers for graduates constituency includeed Byndoor Government Pre University College, Shankaranarayana Pre University College, Shankaranarayana, Kundapur Government Pre University College, Brahmavar Government Pre University College, Brahmavar, Manipal Junior College, Manipal, Government Pre University College Udupi North Division, Government Pre University College, Udupi Middle, Zilla Panchayath Model Higher Primary School, Kaup, Government Pre University College, Karkala and Government Higher Primary School, Ajekar.
