Students Union ride on Philip double

Last Updated 15 June 2012, 17:16 IST

Philip’s brace powered Students Union to a 2-1 victory over Postal FC in their BDFA Super Division match at the Bangalore Football stadium on Friday.

Students, who had registered a shock 1-0 win over HASC in their first match, now have six points from three games, while Postal remained on three points after as many matches. Philip’s goals came in the 71st and 80th minutes, and  Gopi struck Postal’s only goal in the 72nd minute.

The first-half began with both teams looking to stamp their authority. Philip went clear on a through ball from Abubaker but shot the ball wide in the sixth minute. Postal had their first opportunity to score in the 12th minute but Chetan Kumar’s header off a Venkatesh cross flew over the crosspiece. Jai’s free-kick in the 23rd minute also raced just over the woodwork as Postal’s search for a goal continued.

Abubaker almost gave Students their opening goal, but his powerful left-footer clipped the top of the goalpost in the 40th minute. In the 43rd minute, Gopi blasted a shot that missed the target as a goal eluded both the sides.

After the breather, Postal came close scoring in the 51st minute when Gopi fired the ball past Students custodian Tony only to be ruled off-side. Postal brought in Sham for Sunil in the 64th minute to infuse some energy in the midfield. Students also made a substitution, Arun coming in for Avinash upfront in the 65th minute. Six minutes later their efforts bore fruit. In the 71st minute, Philip slotted the ball home off an Abubaker pass as Students went 1-0 up. But Postal equalised in the next minute with Gopi’s scoring off a Subba pass.

Ricky’s elevated shot from the right went over the crosspiece in the 78th minute as frustration began to build for Student’s. Philip settled the issue in the 88th minute when he slammed the ball past Postal custodian Ravindran after a sizzling run from the left.

Other result: ‘A’ Division: BUFC: 2 (Madhu 6th, Clivert 32nd) bt Dharmaraja Union: 0.
