NADA bans six athletes for doping during National School Games

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) today banned six athletes after they were caught for using prohibited substances during the 57th National School Games held here from December 28 to January 3.

Gagan Kumar Patel (wrestling), Jugraj Singh and Himanshu (weightlifting), Shivaji More, Ashwani Kumar and Manoj Kumar (boxing) were handed out different sanctions ranging from three months to two years after their 'B' samples also returned positive.

NADA had conducted doping tests during the School Games in which 11 samples were found to be positive out of 80 collected. Thereafter, 'B' samples were also found to be positive and the cases were referred to Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel of NADA.

"The Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel completed its hearing in the six cases and awarded sanctions to the athletes while in three cases, the orders of the are expected on June 20 and and remaining two cases in July, 2012," said a NADA statement.

This is the first time in the country that school students have been indicted for doping offences and issued sanction/ban.
