Last Updated 18 June 2012, 16:38 IST

It was during the monsoon of 2009 that people of Baindoor woke up to the worst flood that they had ever experienced.

After the incident, the local MP had promised to provide boats in the region to shift them to safer places in the event of flood again.

However, even till date the villagers are waiting for boats, that could ferry them to safer places. Floods are common occurence during monsoon in this area.
River Sowparnika, which flows via Baindoor and Kollur, overflows during the monsoon, throws life out of gear for people living along its course of flow.

However for the villagers of Baindoor, the flood that hit in July 2009 is an unforgettable one. It affected hundreds of families living in Herur, Navunda, Nada and Maravante area.

MP Oscar Fernandes taking note of the situation had even visited the spot in 2009 along with the then MLA K Gopal Poojary.

The MLA had requested the MP to provide boats to the villagers from MP’s funds and Oscar had promptly responded to the demand by releasing Rs three lakhs from (MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) fund for purchase of boats. He had written about the same to the Deputy Commissioner on March 10, 2010.

Exactly after one year of receiving the letter, the Deputy Commissioner sent an order copy to the Engineering Department of Panchayat Raj asking for the implementation of the programme. After this, there has been no news about the boat.

However, even this monsoon the villagers continue to live in fear keeping hopes alive that at least this time the administration would come to their rescue.
