Monsoon weakens in Kalasa

Last Updated 21 June 2012, 18:27 IST

Mansoon has weakened in Kalasa hobli over the last two days and the region has got very less rainfall than usual.

After June 15, Kalasa has observed only three days of drizzling and rain has disappeared once again. Usual rainfall at Kalasa in the month of June is 750 mm, but this year the region has got 200 mm of rain till date showing deficit of 550 mm.

As a result paddy cultivation has become a challenge in Kalasa. Pepper vines have started blooming but good rain is necessary for the pollination. Though planters who had cultivated pepper expected bumper crop this year, the rain scenario has washed way their hopes.

Robusta coffee planters and arecanut farmers are expecting rains for good crop in next season.

“If we get too much rains in July we may loss both arecanut and coffee crop. So we are expecting lighter, average rainfall in coming four months which would create conducive environment,” farmer Raghavendra said.
