Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Monday indicated that a hike in power tariff in the city was inevitable, saying that residents cannot expect the same electricity rates which existed 10 years ago.

"You have seen the rates at which power prices have increased. People cannot expect the same prices like Rs.2 (per unit) which were 10 years ago," Dikshit said after a cabinet meeting.

Sources said that the new tariff will be decided this week and will be applicable from July 1.

In 2011, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission hiked the power tariff by 21.77 percent.
It also announced to review the tariff every quarter to meet the cost incurred by the private distribution companies (discom) to purchase power.

While North Delhi Power Ltd. has sought an 18 percent hike in tariff, BSES Rajdhani wants a hike of 20 percent and BSES Yamuna has asked for a 27 percent increase in tariff.
