A two-day workshop for teachers of rural high schools on effective use of visuals and information of eighth standard was inaugurated on Thursday at JSS women’s college, Saraswathipuram by JSS Science and Social Association, Bangalore sponsored by the office of scientific advisor, government of India.

The workshop was conducted for teachers in the backdrop of release of DVDs by the association to teach students of eighth standard. A series of 36 DVDs consisting of science (biology, physics, chemistry) and mathematics lessons for students was released recently.

The step was taken by the association not to deprive high school students of rural areas from facilities which urban students enjoy. The DVDs include pictorial representations, detailed and explained texts, animations described in ordered series etc proving to be efficient in teaching rural talents.

Vice chancellor of University of Mysore V G Talwar inaugurating the workshop here, opined there is drastic changes in science and technology activating alterations in teaching methods, syllabus, study methods and grasping knowledge by students. With the atypical concepts of education in schools, colleges and universities, there has always been a gap between them and rural education system has most of the times been neglected. “Experiments by education experts should be continuously conducted to lessen such gaps.”

Former vice chancellor of Kuvempu University P Venkataramaiah said, present world demands people to be on par with speed of science development which in turn has effects on students.

He opined high school level students are more curious about aspects of science which needs an encouragement and measures by educationists in this regard would be helpful. He called upon teachers to change the teaching methods to be successful and mould students’ talent for further achievements.

Honorary director of JSS Science and Social Association, Bangalore and former vice chancellor of  Bangalore University K Siddappa, former vice chancellor of Mangalore University M I Savadatti and public education division of JSS Mahavidyapeeta’s K
