Cathedral High School survived by the skin of their teeth, upsetting favourites Bishop Cotton Boys’ High School 1-0 to emerge champions in the Centenary Shield hockey tournament for Seniors here on Tuesday.

Despite being put under pressure by a wasteful Cottons for the better part of the fixture, surprise finalists Cathedral struck from one of the few chances that came their way to capture the prestigious inter-school title at a noisy KSHA stadium.

Following a fine counter-attack just seconds before the halftime hooter, Ravi Kumar crossed the ball from the left which Cottons’ goalkeeper Steven Samuel failed to clear. Completely unmarked, Vishwas KS tapped the ball home easily to spark wild celebrations.

The Cottonians have only themselves to blame for the defeat, squandering a number of chances, some even from point-blank range. Credit must be given to Cathedral goalkeeper Bhargav too for producing at least a dozen saves that eventually carried them home.

Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Boys’ High School didn’t have to endure any tense moments as they rolled over St John’s High School 5-1 to lift the Fr Eric Vaz memorial title for Juniors. Rohan M John and Sujith Suresh struck a brace each while Syed Rasiq Ahmed scored one goal. Vijay restored a semblance of pride for the battered St John’s.

Results: Centenary Shield: Cathedral High School: 1 (Vishwas KS 25th) bt Bishop Cotton Boys School: 0.

Fr Eric Vaz memorial tournament: St Joseph’s Boys’ High School: 5 (Syed Rasiq Ahmed 9th, Rohan M John 15th, 19th, Sujith Suresh 21st, 27th) bt St John’s High School: 1 (Vijay 28th).
