Maya sacks BSP UP chief

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Wednesday sacked Swami Prasad Maurya as the party’s Uttar Pradesh chief and appointed former minister Ram Achal Rajbhar in his place.

Maurya, however, will continue to be the head of the BSP legislature party. He is also the leader of opposition in the state Assembly.

Mayawati announced this in a meeting of party MLAs and MPs. According to sources, the decision is aimed at wooing the powerful rajbhar community in the forthcoming general elections.

The community had not supported the BSP in the recently concluded Assembly polls. As a result several party nominees lost elections. Even Ram Achal’s wife had been humbled at the polls.

The new state president was recently charged with assaulting his political rivals in Ambedkar Nagar district.

An FIR had been registered against six persons, including Rajbhar, charging them with attempt to murder, unlawful assembly and assault.
