An off-duty Delhi police constable was allegedly beaten up by three men in an apparent road rage incident in north east Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area on Thursday. One of the attackers was overpowered and handed over to police.

Pradeep, 30, who is posted with the 3rd Battalion of Delhi Armed Police, was riding a motorcycle from Vikas Puri towards his brother Praveen’s home at Johripur village when the incident took place at a12.10 am.

He claimed that when he reached Loni Road, he saw three men – later identified as Jagdish Singh, Pawan and Manoj– pushing a broken down delivery van.

“One of them allegedly kicked Pradeep’s motorcycle when he came close to them due to which he lost balance, but managed to keep driving. He then stopped his vehicle and entered into an argument with the trio,” a senior police official said.

Suddenly, one of the accused pushed the constable from behind. He fell down along with the motorcycle.

When he tried to stand up, one man allegedly caught hold of him, while the two others hit him with a brick and started kicking him.

They stopped beating Pradeep when he raised an alarm and noticing the commotion, locals gathered at the spot.

The three men was trying to flee from the spot when Pradeep, along with locals, overpowered Jagdish, a resident of Karawal Nagar.

Jagdish was later handed over to police, who also seized the delivery van.

On questioning, Jagdish confessed to have attacked Pradeep and told police that Manoj and his brother-in-law Pawan were also involved in the attack.

A case of wrongful restraint and causing hurt has been lodged against the three men at Jyoti Nagar police station. Pradeep received medical treatment for minor injuries at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
