A 45-year-old Delhi Police head constable was found dead with a single bullet wound to his chest while on duty at a senior police official’s residence in Gurgaon on Sunday morning.

It is suspected that Virender Singh, accidentally shot himself while checking his service revolver.

Virender, a resident of Wazirabad village in north Delhi, was posted as an escort guard of additional deputy commissioner of police (south west) Ravi Shankar. “He was found lying in a pool of blood at Shankar’s Palam Vihar residence in Gurgaon at around 9 am on Sunday,” a Gurgaon police official said.

“His colleagues rushed him to nearby Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival,” added the official.

Virender joined duty at around 8 am on Sunday and went to the room used by Shankar’s security officials.

It is believed that he was checking and cleaning his service revolver when it accidentally discharged because of a glitch.

“The bullet struck Virender in his lung and traveled to his heart. We are investigating to ascertain whether the incident was a suicide or accident,” the official added.

Police have sent Virender’s body for post-mortem and informed his family members.

Sources said that no suicide note was recovered from the spot, but Virender’s colleagues claim that he looked tense in the morning.

He had joined duty on Sunday after a short leave. Shankar was also said to be at home when the incident took place.
