Illegal structure should be pulled down, says BJP

Last Updated 19 July 2012, 20:03 IST

Even as the North Delhi Municipal Corporation took possession of the land on which remains of a Mughal-era mosque have been found,  Yogender Chandolia, BJP leader and chairman of the corporation’s standing committee, has demanded removal of the new construction on its ruins.

Saying that anti-social elements have blatantly violated the law to grab the corporation land, Chandolia demanded that Lieutenant Governor of Delhi should order removal of the construction.

“Being the administrator of the city, the Lieutenant Governor must order the commissioner of the North Corporation to remove the illegal construction from Subhash Park land,” he said.

Stringent action

The BJP councillor also demanded the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to act against people who have violated norms on preserving ancient structures.

“Enforcing any physical change in any heritage structure is an offence. The ASI must intervene and restore the old status, or else thousands of such case would start cropping up across the country,” he said.

Chandolia termed the entire episode as an attempt by people with vested political interests.

He alleged that such people are using religion as a veil to commercially exploit the prime location of the land.

“The entire episode has been stage managed. Thousands of people have been called to vitiate the religious atmosphere in the region,” Chandolia said.

“All this is being done when the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is planning to spend crores of rupees for beautification of the Jama Masjid area and Red Fort under the Shajahanabad Redevelopment Plan,” Chandolia added.
