After receiving much success and appreciation for its Summer Ballet Festival, the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra is back with its magnum opus – Krishna on the occasion of Janmashtmi.

A celebration of the much loved mythological figure, it promises larger-than-life theatre, fine classical dance and a transporting ambience - all hallmarks of SBKK ballets. Krishna is set to be unveiled at the Kamani Auditorium, August 6-11, 6:30 pm onwards.

Krishna has been staged continuously for the past 35 years in the Capital and this will be its 36th showing in the City. Every time, it has left dance-drama and particularly the Lord’s lovers in awe of his legend.

It traces his life right from the circumstances of his birth, to being jailed by Kans, to his death from an arrow piercing his gentle feet. His boyhood mischief, from consuming mud and displaying the universe in his tiny mouth to being the notorious butter-milk thief, is depicted with affection. Then his youthful love for Radha and leaving Mathura eventually to slay Kans signifies his coming of age. Finally, his leading Arjun into the battle of Kurukshetra and delivering the secrets to a meaningful life through enunciation of Bhagavad Gita is a show of power in ballet.

Every facet of Lord Krishna’s life is presented with sensitivity and dynamism lending a mesmeric uniqueness to the show.

The spell-binding choreography, lighting, costumes, sound systems and absorbing environment are a forte of director Padamshri Shobha Deepak Singh’s productions which make them the heart warming presentations that they all are.

She says, “Krishna is one of our longest standing productions. We have put in our heart, soul and mind to make it what it is. Plus, every year, we keep introducing new chapters of the mythological hero’s life, and innovating on others, to keep it new and fascinating. We are hopeful that this time also it will be loved and appreciated as much as it has been every time.”
