A class 10 student died after his head accidentally hit an electric pole when he was leaned outside the window of a moving school bus, at Punjabi Bagh in west Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

Jaskiran, 16, lived with his parents at Raja Park in north-west Delhi’s Rani Bagh. His father Pintu Singh, runs the famous Chawla Chicken restaurant in Punjabi Bagh.
According to a police official, the incident took place just outside Hansraj Model School when Jaskiran boarded a school bus to return home around 2.40 pm.

“An initial probe revealed that Jaskiran was seated on the last row on the right side of the bus. There was heavy traffic in front of the Punjabi Bagh school due to which the vehicle was moving slowly. Suddenly, the teenager stuck his head outside the window to buy ice-cream,” the official said.

It is believed that Jaskiran did not realise that there was an electric pole nearby and it was too late before he could react. “His head hit the pole and he began to bleed profusely. It is alleged that the bus driver did not stop the vehicle when the incident took
place,” the official said.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Jaskiran’s body was hanging half outside the window when people raised an alarm and the driver stopped the vehicle around 100 metres away from the pole. A police control vehicle rushed the 16-year-old to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. “He is said to have died due to head injuries and excessive bleeding,” the official added.

Jaskiran’s body will be handed over to his family after a post-mortem is conducted at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the driver of the bus, Raju, was overpowered by locals and handed over to police after he tried to flee from the spot. Helper of the bus, Suresh, however, defended Raju and claimed that the vehicle was stopped as soon as the incident took place.

Hansraj Model School principal Reeta Rajan Kumar, tried to divert the blame away from school claiming that the bus was hired. “We are not involved in the working of the school bus. We will, however, lodge a police complaint against the bus owner,” she said.
It is also claimed that other students in the bus failed to notice the incident as Jaskiran was seated on the last seat and he fell unconscious on impact.
A case has been registered at Punjabi Bagh police station.
