Coming out of the shadows

The first-year students of the journalism department of BMS College for Women had a superb start as they were given a grand welcome by their seniors.

Not only did they have a cultural programme, but there was also an ice-breaking session, where the juniors voiced their opinions about the various facets of the college.

“We organised an ice-breaking session so as to make the freshers feel comfortable with us and with the new change in their life. The transition from PUC to degree college can be little scary. The freshers find it very difficult in the initial days of college,” said Deepika.

Trishala M, a first-year journalism student, said, “The seniors informed us about the regular activities conducted in the department like film fest, mock press conference etc. This has made me was very excited about choosing this subject.”

The freshers got an opportunity to speak about themselves and about the subjects on which they needed clarifications. “We raised our doubts and clarifications were given to us by our seniors,” explained Rashmi P K, another first-year student.

Many games, which would bring out the talent and negate the hesitation among the first-year students, were also organised. “We played many games like ‘Pick n Speak’, ‘Musical Chair’, ‘Dumb Charades’ etc. We also selected ‘Miss Active’ from the freshers,” said Supriya M, who won the title.

Noor Zahra, a first-year student, said that it was a great party and they were able to shake a leg as a DJ was arranged by the department.

“We danced and enjoyed the food as well. Chocolates were given as gifts to winners. Besides, it was a great opportunity to know and meet our seniors. It was a good opportunity as we don’t get time to interact with them due to the strict time-table,” said Deepika. The students also expressed their opinion on the discipline on the campus, the professionalism of lecturers and the beautiful ambience.

“The college is all set to host the talent hunt competition, for which we are excited and gearing up,” concluded Sahana S.
