Dubbing his wife of 25 years ‘unchaste’, a man allegedly shaved her head and then paraded her in the village, in full public view along with his relatives in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district.

According to reports, the hapless woman kept pleading with her tormentors, which included her brother-in-law and a schoolteacher, but it fell on deaf ears. No one from the village also dared to come to her rescue. The incident happened at Ataria on Sunday afternoon, reports said. According to the police, Archana, a native of West Bengal was married to Dodram 25 years ago. He was a habitual drunkard.  As the family found it difficult to make ends meet owing to Dodram’s drinking, Archana  worked as a maid. Recently, owing to the curfew in the town and its adjoining areas following communal violence, Archana had to spend a week at a house where she worked as a maid. She was thrashed by her husband and his brother when she returned.  “My husband accused me of having an illicit relationship with a servant who also worked at the same place with,” she said. Feeling humiliated, Archana decided not to come to the village and started living at the place she worked. An enraged Dodram and his brother wanted to punish her and make sure that she does not dare to live separately, police sources said. Dodram called Archana to his home on some pretext, and then with the help of his brother and some others tonsured her after tying her hands and legs. They later paraded her in the village ignoring her desperate pleas and then locked her in a room.A case has been registered against four persons and one of the culprits identified as Ramchandra Yadav, a school teacher, has been arrested. A manhunt had been launched to nab the others.
