Last Updated 15 May 2009, 17:48 IST

There are around 8,000 people who reside in about 1,400 houses in the town limits. The town panchayat is supplying around 9-10 lakh liters of water from 35 bore wells to 925 private and 65 public water supply connections per day. The panchayat has to spend around Rs 18 lakh per month, which includes electricity charge, contract employees wage and other expenses. Meanwhile, the income the panchayat earns through water supply bills was only Rs 5 lakh.

Sources in the department said that they were planning to hike the water tariff. The Rs 45 levied from citizens was not sufficient to meet the expenses. Hence, the authorities are planning to increase the tariff to around Rs 90-100, sources said.

Authorities are also planning to disconnect all public taps as part of its cost cutting measures. Around 500 residents will have to apply for water supply connection if the public taps were disconnected.
