Three persons, including two women, have been arrested in the city for running a fake placement agency, police said on Tuesday. After taking an advance from the new employers, the maids used to flee from their homes.

Dilip Mandal, 30, Sapna, 19 and Sonia, 24, were arrested in Lajpat Nagar on Monday, said additional commissioner of police (south-east) Ajay Chaudhary.

Dilip used to print pamphlets and circulate them through newspapers. After people contacted them, Dilip used to supply the maids after negotiating and receiving commission ranging between Rs 12,000 to Rs 28,000. Then the maids used to flee from the employers’ house within one or two days. Employers dialled the numbers given on the pamphlets, but they were switched off. “The accused was running this racket with 29 different name,” said Chaudhary. They were held after police received a complaint from Aninda Mandal of Lajpat Nagar. Aninda told police that Dilip, from Saroj placement service, cheated him of Rs 14,000, Dilip supplied him a maid named Sapna who disappeared on the next day. But when he tried to contact the placement agency, all the mobile numbers were found switched off.Dilip told police that they have cheated more than 60 people by using the same modus operandi. “At Dilip’s instance, maids used by him – Sapna and Sonia – were  arrested,” said Chaudhary.
