Four youths have been arrested for their alleged involvement in five cases of burglary in government flats at Moti Bagh, police said on Tuesday.

Shabir Ali, Shahid Ali, Ravi Dass and Jaggal used to target houses where the balcony doors or windows were found open, and steal mobiles, laptops and electronic articles.

“The accused are drug addicts and started committing burglaries to meet expenses. To escape from police, they used to sleep in the jungle area near Dhaula Kuan,” said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).

They were held after a complaint filed by Bhaskar Bhattacharjee. He reported that his Nanakpura house had been burgled.

On August 2, he had kept the balcony door open at night.

When his family woke up around 7 am on August 3, they found a cellphone, a laptop, a purse containing around Rs 10,000, an ATM card and several official documents missing.

Police minutely analysed details of several criminals released on bail.  Shabir and Ravi were then nabbed and at their instance Shahid and Jaggalwere arrested.
Stolen property and a knife were also recovered.
