In a first of its kind initiative by the civic body, the New Delhi Municipal Council has successfully disposed seven tonnes of electronic-waste in an environment friendly manner.

The recycling of the electronic waste was done by an EMS ISO 14001: 2004 and OHSAS 18001: 2007 certified company in Roorkee.

“Seven tonne of electronic waste was collected by the company in the January. Since the process of recycling is lengthy, we received the certificate of successful disposal this month,” said O P Mishra, NDMC director (IT).

The recycled electronic waste was collected from different offices of the civic body. It included electronic items like computer, television, calculator, watches etc. Earlier the civic agency used to merely auction the scrap electronic items.

The certificate of safe disposal was issued to the civic body by Atero Recycling – one of the five companies on the panel selected by the Delhi government for disposing e-waste.
“All the material has been processed in an environment-friendly manner in accordance with guidelines set by the authorised agency at our facility in Roorkee,” CEO of Atero, Rohan Gupta said.

The NDMC officials said five tonne of e-waste would be recycled in the next phase.
“Around five tonne of electronic items have been collected over the last three months from all the schools of the civic body. It would be recycled by the same company over the next few months,” Mishra said.

The civic agency also earns some revenue from the recycling process.
“The aim of the entire exercise is to dispose the scrap in an eco-friendly manner.

However, the company which recycled the waste shares the profit from sale of the recycled good. We earned Rs 3 lakh against the seven tonne of waste which was recycled,” Mishra said. The civic agency is likely to earn revenue of around Rs 2 lakh from the five tonne of electronic waste collected from the schools.
