The JnNURM directorate under the Ministry of Urban Development has issued a circular to the principal secretaries of urban development departments of all the states and union territories to adopt BBMP’s model of the property identification (PID) system (based on Geographic Information System) for property tax collection.

K A Munendra Kumar, BBMP’s taxation and finance standing committee chairperson, told reporters on Monday that the PID system had also been nominated for the prime minister’s award. Recently, with the cooperation of the assistant revenue officer (ARO) and the deputy commissioner (DC), an amount of Rs 16 crore was collected as property tax from commercial establishments in BTM Layout area alone, he said.

“We are planning to have more field visits by the AROs and DCs to ensure that commercial establishments, especially malls and shopping complexes, pay property tax on time. Stringent action will be taken against defaulters,” he said.

The chairman said for the months of April, May and June, they expected the property owners to voluntarily pay their taxes. The drum beating programme in front of properties whose owners had defaulted on paying tax, may resume in future, he said.

Kumar said nearly 90 per cent of the properties in core areas would be allotted unique PIDs by the end of September. The standing committee members promised that by October 15, all properties, including the ones in newly added areas of BBMP, would get PID numbers.
