City's dental institute awarded

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) bagged two awards for operational excellence in public sector in health. Its director-principal received Healthcare Personality of the Year-2012 award, while the institute got the special jury recognition award.

The awards were distributed at the FICCI Heal 2012 health conclave. Organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry along with Quality Council of India, New Delhi and Ernst and Young as official tabulators, the awards aimed at felicitating organisations for operational excellence in public sector and people for effective healthcare delivery.

The jury members included former Chief Justice of India R C Lahoti; WHO representative designate to India Dr Nata Menabde and  special secretary, ministry of health and family welfare Keshav Desiraju, among others.

Prof Mahesh Verma was awarded for his contributions to the health sector in innovation. He brought transformational changes in patient care, research and healthcare education. He became the first dental specialist in India to receive this award.

MAIDS was termed as a role model for its community initiatives reflecting innovations, academic excellence and conducting path breaking research and training programmes.

Prof Verma said MAIDS was the only dental institution in the Capital in public sector giving tertiary dental care which is affordable and accessible. It caters to nearly 3 lakh patients annually.
