5 carjackers held, booked in 18 cases of auto theft

Five persons have been arrested for involvement in 18 cases of carjacking and motor vehicle theft lodged in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, police said on Wednesday.

Praveen Sharma, Praveen Sehwag, Sandeep Sehrawat, Amir Saifi and Vinod Dalal stopped vehicles on highways and major roads in the NCR and stole them at gunpoint, said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

Renganathan said, “We had specific information that four people would be traveling on a Tata Indigo car to Chandigarh.” Following which they were held.

As a part of the investigation, every vehicle plying on the road was keenly observed on August 25 and after about eight to 10 hours of vigil, the car bearing a particular registration number was noticed traveling on NH-1.

Three police teams followed it from different directions and apprehended the accused at Karnal toll plaza.

“The car in which they were travelling was also found to be stolen and a loaded pistol was also recovered,” Renganathan said.

They were remanded to police custody for seven days. During interrogation, it was found that they were previously involved in many cases of carjacking and theft in which they are on bail.
