Police security for VIPs on 'hit list'

Last Updated 31 August 2012, 19:15 IST

The government has decided to provide additional police security to VIPs in the twin cities following threats to their lives from terrorist groups.

The Home department has issued instructions to the city police soon after the CCB police declared the arrest of the terror suspects in Bangalore on Thursday. Therefore, special security arrangements under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) had been made for the VIPs, said sources in the police department.

Round-the-clock security has been provided to MLC Vijay Sankeshwar, whose name has reportedly figured in the terrorists’ hit list. A team comprising an inspector and two constables will escort Sankeshwar.

Besides, four constables and a head constable will be stationed at Sankeshwar’s residence at Naveen Park on Kusugal Road in Hubli. Member of Parliament Prahlad Joshi has been provided enhanced security.

Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar will visit Hubli on Saturday. “The chief minister is visiting Hubli tomorrow and he will take part in various programmes. The fact that one of the terror accused lived near the CM’s house has made us ensure proper security arrangements during his visit this time,” said a police officer.

Zafar’s family leaves Hubli

The family members of Zafar Sollapur, one of the terror suspects arrested by the CCB police, have vacated their house at Badami Nagar in Hubli. The door and the gate have been locked. “Policemen will be posted at Zafar’s house round-the-clock to prevent miscreants from damaging evidences in the house,” said sources.

Sadiq’s house searched

Ghantikeri police on Friday searched the house of Sadiq Lashqari, one of the arrested suspects here.

The team led by Inspector Ravindra Shirur visited the house at Krupa Colony in Kasturba Nagar and checked various documents and the car used by the accused. They also questioned Sadiq’s wife Rameeja. “Sadiq’s family came here just 20 days back. His family members never mingled with anybody,” said neighbour Victoria.
