An elderly woman was critically injured after being shot at by two men inside her house in south-east Delhi’s Hazrat Nizammuddin on Friday.

Rukhiyar, 59, who lives with her family in an apartment behind Nizamuddin Dargah, is undergoing treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre.

Sources claim that she has some previous criminal record and the incident took place due to rivalry between two groups in the area.

“She has about a dozen cases lodged against her in police stations across south-east Delhi,” sources said.

The attack took place when Rukhiyar was alone at her house around 10 pm on Friday.
An initial police probe revealed that two men knocked at the door and when Rukhiyar opened it, they opened fire at her.

“She sustained a bullet injury in her stomach and fell down,” a police official said.

Hearing the commotion, Rukhiyar’s neighbours started gathering outside her house and saw the attackers fleeing on a motorcycle.

A call was also made to the police control room after which a team rushed Rukhiyar to the AIIMS trauma centre.

“Rukhiyar’s condition is critical, but stable,” the official added.

A case of attempt to murder under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged against unknown persons with Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.

“We are investigating the matter from personal enmity and business rivalry angles.

Nothing can be said unless we record statements of the victim’s family, friends and neighbours,” the official said.

Sources further said cops have identified the attackers and have detained them to confirm the sequence of events.
