HC asks VTU to hold supplementary exams

Last Updated 03 September 2012, 18:21 IST

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday directed Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) to hold supplementary exam, so that students who have more than four subjects pending can clear them and move on to the next semester.

Hearing a petition by more than 100 students of VTU, Justice Ram Mohan Reddy directed the VTU to conduct the exams for first and second semester students, to help them clear backlogs.

As per the VTU rules, students who have more than four subjects pending will not be admitted to third semester.

In their petition, the students submitted that the VTU does not conduct supplementary exams, although autonomous institutes hold exams to enable students to move to next the semester.

The Counsel for petitioners, in his submission, said both the VTU and autonomous institutes are based on UGC schemes. Thus, the education pattern under both is the same. “Though, students from both autonomous institutes and the VTU go through CET, VTU students are discriminated against,” he said.

However, Justice Ram Mohan Reddy did not direct the VTU to hold supplementary examination for other semesters akin to students of first and second semesters.

Homestay attack

The High Court has adjourned the hearing of a petition seeking action against those involved in the attack on women at a homestay in Mangalore.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna adjourned the matter after the State government submitted that the investigation
is complete and that the charge sheet will be filed within 15 days.

The petitioner S Vasudevan, a City-based advocate had sought the Court that the investigation be handed over to CBI.
