Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa said on Tuesday that he would hold talks with Governor H R Bhardwaj soon and convince him that the bill on regularisation of houses built on government land was aimed at helping the poor people and not land grabbers.

He was reacting to a query on the Governor returning the bill to the government, at a press meet here.

Confident

He said, “I don’t know the reason for the rejection of the bill. However, we are confident that Bhardwaj will realise the significance of the bill.”

Referring to the padayatra launched by JD(S) from Kerehalli in Sorab taluk to Shimoga seeking the amendment of the Forest Rights Act and distribution of title deeds to bagair hukum cultivators, he said, “JD(S) has organised this for political gains.

If JD(S) leaders had genuine concern towards bagair hukum cultivators, they could have issued title deeds to the cultivators when they were in power.

“They did not raise their voice in favour of bagair hukum cultivators for the past four years.”
“All of a sudden, they are showing concern towards poor farmers.

But, BJP has been a voice of the poor farmers for the past several years. We will regularise revenue land without fail. But, regularising forest land is an uphill task.

“So, I appeal to the leaders of Congress and JD(S) to give suggestions to the government in this regard,” Eshwarappa added.
