Despite being old, 60-year-old Patiraja tried her best to prevent her son from killing himself. And she did succeed, but she herself got shot and killed in the process.

The tragic incident occurred at Rudalapur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, about 50 kilometers from here, on Saturday.

According to the police sources, Patiraja’s son Gulliram, a marginal farmer, had some heated exchanges with his wife on Saturday evening over a family matter. Gulliram was very agitated and had thrashed his wife and children after the incident.

Sources said quoting Gulliram’s family that the couple often fought over petty issues and the former had earlier also threatened that he would kill himself.

Apparently fed up with the daily fights, Gulliram decided to take the extreme step. Gulliram, who had a country-made pistol, loaded the same and carried it with him, when he retired to bed at night.

Gulliram’s mother must have seen her son taking the gun with him as she was awake when he took out the pistol. She tried to prevent her son from shooting himself. In the scuffle, Gulliram accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Patiraja in the chest killing her on the spot, according to the police.

She was taken to the nearby primary health center but was declared brought dead. Gulliram also received pellet injury and has been admitted to the hospital.
A remorseful Gulliram now realises his mistake.

“I should not have loaded the gun. I do not deserve to live,” he told the police as he kept blaming himself for killing his mother.

Police officials said that a case of unintentional murder has been registered against Gulliram, who has been arrested. He would also be charged under Indian Arms Act,1959; the police added.
