Cattle census from Sept 15 to Oct 14

 The district is all set for the 19th national cattle census to be conducted in the state from September 15 to October 14.

Animal husbandry and veterinary services department has made preparations for the census in the district amidst drought situation. The census conducted once in five years was last conducted in 2007.

The census is aimed at gathering information about national cattle resource, agriculture equipment and fishery zones.

India, being an agrarian country, the census would facilitate formation of schemes and projects necessary for development. 

A district level committee, chaired by the deputy commissioner, comprising of zilla panchayat CEO, joint director for agriculture, city municipal council president, officials from horticulture, fisheries, animal husbandry and statistics departments has been formed in addition to taluk level committees.

According to the cattle census of 2007, the district has 1,71,129 cattle — hybrid cattle are 1,02,515, buffaloes - 28,438, sheep - 1,33,062, goats - 1,14,884, pigs - 1,005, dogs - 18,424, donkeys - 477, rabbits - 156 and two horses.

Staff distribution

Staff for the census have been distributed according to the number of families and area. One staff for 2,000 families in town area, one for 1,500 families in rural area and one staff for 1,000 families in hill station. One supervisor for every six census staff is nominated.
The district has 96 wards in the town, consisting of 40,484 families, while the rural area has 2,03,775 families. A total of 150 census staff and 26 supervisors are nominated for the purpose.

Workers of Anganavadi, agriculture, sericulture, KMF, CMC and education department are involved in the census. The authorities concerned have decided to include interested educated youth also.

Deputy director for animal husbandry and veterinary services said all required preparations were made for the animal census in the district. Training to the staff is provided, who would start the census in town and rural area at the same time.
