'Monkey business' goes too far in Srinivaspur

Last Updated 29 September 2009, 17:31 IST

A huge gang of monkeys has been living in this village for the last year or so. The monkey menace has become a huge problem for residents; they enter the houses and make away with objects they find inside. The simians enter locked houses by removing the tiles from the roof, and destroy anything they can find there. Food is eaten or strewn all around the house, residents say.

The women of the village are now terrified of stepping out of their houses with baskets of food, as they fear they may be attacked by the monkeys. Eggs kept in the poultry sheds go missing, and elders warn children not to step out of their houses with eatables in their hands.

People no longer try to shoo the monkeys away as the animals launch a retaliatory attack. “If this situation continues, can we ever live in peace,” residents ask.
