A Delhi Police head constable and a constable have been suspended for not properly handling a matter involving an alleged suicide of a youth in north-east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar.

The policemen are posted with the north-east district police. A police officer said on November 14, police were informed about a fight over a bicycle theft in Karawal Nagar.
A 17-year-old boy named Anupam Gupta was then taken to Karawal Nagar police station on suspicion of having stolen the bicycle.

“The matter was settled between two groups and they went back to their homes. The next day, the boy hanged himself at his house,” said the officer.

Anupam was a class 11 student at a government school in north-east Delhi’s Gokulpuri. His family alleged that police tortured him and this led him to commit suicide.

“We are conducting a Vigilance inquiry into the matter to ascertain the allegations. An action will be taken after the inquiry is concluded. The two policemen have been suspended for not properly handling the matter,” the officer added.

Police are also awaiting the post-mortem report of the teenager. No case has been registered as it is a suicide, police added. Anupam stayed with his father Rakesh, mother Mamta and three sisters.

Rakesh runs a helmet shop in the area. Anupam’s family claimed that he had taken a bicycle from a boy in the neighbourhood last Wednesday.

But another neighbour Deepu took the bicycle and sold it. The bicycle owner then filed a complaint with police and Anupam was taken to the local police station on suspicion.

He was allegedly beaten up at the police station despite claiming innocence. His family added that he was allowed to return home around 2 am.

Anupam went to his room and was found hanging from the ceiling fan next morning.
A suicide note was found in the room in which he allegedly mentioned being beaten up.
