A man was robbed and then killed by his friend at Jamia Nagar in south east Delhi, police said, after the victim’s body was fished out of Yamuna River.

Shahnavaz, 23, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh and was staying at rented accommodation at Jamia Nagar, went missing on last Monday from his house.

Police found a body floating on Yamuna River on Saturday. When they fished it out they found it was Shahnavaz.

During investigation, police found that Shahnavaz came to the Capital six months ago and was working in a private company. On September 10, he called his mother told and her he had managed to save Rs 40,000 and was heading home. But Shahnavaz did not reach his hometown on September 11.

Bhuriya, his friend and roommate also checked with Shahnavaz’s mother on the phone if he had reached.

Shahnavaz’s mother then came to New Delhi on Friday, looking for her son. When she could not find him, she approached police the next day.
Police, meanwhile, had recovered the victim’s body.

Police suspect that Shakeer, one of Shahnavaz’s friends overheard his conversation with his mother about the saved money. The victim was last seen along with Shakeer when they left their accommodation.

“We suspect that Shakeer might have looted and killed him, and then dumped his body in the river,” said a police officer.

Police are questioning several people regarding the incident and are looking for Shakeer, who seems untraceable.

After a post-mortem, the body was handed over to his parents.
