In separate incidents, two people were injured in animal attacks in the N Begur forest area at H D Kote taluk in the district.

On September 19, at around 2 pm, a 17-year-old boy was attacked by a leopard in the area of survey number 251 of Basapura village near N Begur.

He was grazing his goats on the land, some three kilometres from the forest perimeter of the Bandipur Tiger reserve when a big cat pounced on him.

Alarm raised

After a nearby group of people raised the alarm, the leopard retreated. The teenager was rushed to H D Kote Hospital by ambulance and later move to KR Hospital in Mysore where he is being treated for injuries to the neck and jaw. Doctors said that he is recovering and out of danger.

The Forest Department has taken steps to trap the animal in order to release it deeper into the forest.

Interestingly, it was at the same village that a leopard had died after being snared on September 14.

Elephant attack

In another incident, Kalaswamy, 38, was attacked by an elephant at Kanakanahalli village near N Begur, on the evening of September 18. The elephant had strayed out of the Bandipur Tiger reserve to raid crops.

When Kalaswamy tried to drive away the elephant, the animal charged at him. Kalaswamy escaped with minor injuries.

The elephant has been driven back to the forest, and Kalaswamy is being treated at KR Hospital in Mysore.

He is safe and out of danger, according to the forest department.
