Deadline for Maoists to surrender ends today

Last Updated 22 September 2012, 16:47 IST

As the deadline for ceasefire call given by the State government for the Maoists to surrender is nearing, the Anti Naxal Force, police and the people seem to be apprehensive over the Maoists surrender.

Though 6 pm on Sunday is set as the deadline for them to surrender, no Maoist has surrendered before the government during the last one week.

The rumours have spread in Subramanya region that the Maoists have apparently crossed Kumardhara river and reached Pushpagiri forest, escaping the police net.

The ANF personnel who worked hard to nab the Maoists are disappointed now as they too have of the opinion that the Maoists have perhaps escaped from the police.

An ANF personnel who did not wish to be named, blamed the government for playing a ‘drama’ by calling for ceasefire. “Our weeks long efforts to catch hold of Maoists have gone in vain,” said an ANF personnel.

On the other hand, ANF IGP Alok Kumar told Deccan Herald that no Maoist has surrendered before the government so far.

“We have stopped combing operations as per the government’s order and we will wait till Sunday 6 pm, for them to surrender. We will decide about the future course of action based on the further direction by the government,” he said.

Letter from Maoist?

In another development, a television channel office in Mangalore has received a letter in the name of a CPI(Maoist) member, condemning the death of Dinakar. The letter apparently written by CPI(Maoist) State Committee spokesperson Gangadhar, states “CPI(Maoist) State Committee condemns the brutal killing of Comrade Dinakar (Ellappa) by ANF.

Expose the evil designs of Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Home Minister Ashok to decimate the Maoist movement through the fascist onslaught using reactionary armed forces...” The letter has raised voice against the eviction of people in various places in Dakshina Kannada district for the purpose of Pushpagiri National Park.

It further states, “We appeal all progressive and revolutionary forces to come forward condemning the state violence and brutal killing of Com Dinakar and extend support to the masses against eviction of Pushpagiri National Park area. We demand to punish M N Anucheth, ASP, Puttur Sub division and all other culprits who are responsible for killing Com Dinakar.”

However, SP Goyal told media persons that Gangadhar who has written the letter is behind the bars. “It seems someone else has written the letter with fake identity and we are probing the matter.”
