Unidentified men robbed an auto driver and his wife of their valuables on the Jnanabharathi campus of the Bangalore University, late on Wednesday night.

According to police the miscreants attempted to molest the woman, who escaped from their clutches by biting the hand of one of the men.

Govindaraju, the auto driver, was evicted from his rented house for defaulting in payment of rent. Since then he was staying in the house of his wife’s sister. Soon differences cropped up and Govindaraju was spending his time in the auto itself, even sleeping in the vehicle during the night.

On Wednesday night, Govindaraju drove his auto into  forest of the campus and called his wife, saying he wanted to speak to her. The gang of men assaulted the couple and snatched gold ornaments and some cash from them.

A case has been registered at Jnanabharathi police station. The Jnanabharathi  campus has seen a spate of crimes in the recent years.

The proposal to close the gates of the campus during the evening was met with strong protests from both the local residents and the BBMP. Now the police are considering restricting vehicular movement on the campus during the night.

“We are thinking of restricting vehicular movement on the Gandhibhavan Road on the campus in the night. We will discuss the issue with the University authorities and implement it very shortly.

If there are no gates, we will request the varsity to erect gates. We want to restrict the vehicular movement in the campus between 10 pm and 5 am,” S N Siddaramappa, DCP (West) told Deccan Herald.

In another case, two strangers robbed a manager of PVR Cinemas of Rs 20,000 and a cellphone, Wednesday night. Sandeep Shetty was threatened by the miscreants when he was returning home. He was threatened at knife point, police said.

Yogesh, a cashier with a bar and restaurant, was robbed of Rs 80,000 by two unidentified men in Ulsoor. The incident occurred when Yogesh was on his way to his employer’s house with the day’s collection.
