Five crushed to death

Five persons, including four of a family, were killed on the spot when a lorry collided with an MUV on NH-17 in Balase village of Ankola, on Friday.

Lakshmi Ganapathi Naik, 70, Manjunath Krishna Naik, 55, of Kadatoka Madageri of Honnavar taluk, Geetha Mohan Naik, 35, of Guddanakatta, Krishna Devappa Naik, 55, of Kumta and the driver Diwakar Jatti Nagappa Naik, 24, are the dead.

The accident occurred when the family was on its way to Karwar to seek treatment for Lakshmi.The driver of the vehicle tried to avoid a pothole when the sand-laden lorry rammed the MUV.

The bodies where extricated from the mangled remains of the MUV with the help of local people. The driver of the lorry Shivalingappa Mallappa fled the scene.
